Make a Lasting Difference

Volunteer to make a lasting difference in the life of a veteran and their family.

Hands-on or behind-the-scenes, every hour invested helps a veteran in need move to a place of stability.

Whether you are a veteran or community member, your help will make a difference.  Scroll down to learn more about our needs and opportunities for both veterans and community members.

Are you a Veteran?

As a veteran, you understand the challenges every veteran faces.  We need your hands-on help.

Drivers

Drivers:  The veterans we work with sometimes need a ride to make important appointments.  MVN needs volunteer drivers across the State.  In most cases, MVN will provide a $25 gas gift card to cover the expense.

Mentors

Mentors:  After we help a veteran through a crisis, it is important to stay in touch with them to ensure they know help is still available.  Mentors are not caseworkers, but someone for a veteran to talk to.  Our mentors provide support and help when caseworkers are not be available.

Legal Advisor:  While PTL (Pine Tree Legal Assistance) is contracted to help veterans with various legal issues, they don’t have the staff to handle all cases.  And, there are some cases they aren’t contracted to support.  MVN needs legal support volunteers to assist veterans in obtaining affordable legal services, in most cases, pro bono.

Financial Planner

Please contact Ryan Tuttle by email.  Ryan coordinates our financial planning support for veterans.

Fundraiser

Fundraiser:  We need support for event-planning and hands-on execution; also non-government grant research, writing and /or reporting.

MVN relies on individual donors, grants and community support to accomplish its mission.  We do not accept government funding.

Ambassador

Wherever you go, help us spread the word that MVN is here to help. Here is a great online article about the importance of non-profit ambassadorship.

Community Member?

We need members of the community who can bring skills and experience to our behind-the-scenes work.

Accountant

Accountant:  A person with an accounting background to assist the Treasurer, participate in audits, and assist with non-profit financial reporting.

Executive / Strategic Planner

Strategic Thinker:  MVN requires someone who is familiar with  strategic thinking and planning to ensure the long term viability of the organization.

Legal Advisor:  We seek two areas of legal support.

  • For MVN:  As a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization, we are sometimes in need of legal advice regarding policies and organizational management.
  • For Veterans: While PTL (Pine Tree Legal Assistance) is contracted to help veterans with various legal issues, they don’t have the staff to handle all cases.  And, there are some cases they aren’t contracted to support.  MVN needs legal support volunteers to assist veterans in obtaining affordable legal services, in most cases, pro bono.
Fund Development

Fund Developer:  We seek someone with a non-profit development background to assist in developing strategies for fundraising, leading other volunteers in executing key tasks associated with annual fundraising,  and ensuring the organization’s long term financial viability.

Governance

Governance:  We seek volunteers with either:

  • prior experience serving or working with a non-profit board to assist with implementing best practices associated with board management and governance.
  • a backgroud in business organization to ensure compliance with non-profit  government regulations and organizational structure.

Either background will help us ensure organizational sustainability.

Event Planner

Event Planning:  MVN participates in a number of events around the state.  Each event has a focus on one or more of three objectives:

  1. continuing to develop the network of organizations that support veterans in need (federal, state, and non-profits),
  2. focusing on letting all veterans know how MVN supports veterans in need, or
  3. fundraising.

From a Veteran In Need

This review is for Maine Veterans In Need! I am Timothy Majeroni! An Army and Marine Corp Veteran with a Service Connected Disability. I was in a financial situation and needed fuel for my mobile home. Maine Veterans In Need helped me without question.

I am a Combat Veteran with PTSD and I struggle at times making appropriate and proportionate decisions. For the past 2 years Maine Veterans In Need, along with their associated organization, Maine Veterans Project, have gone above and beyond to help me.

Everyone associated is essential and necessary professionally, respectful, trustworthy, friendly and very helpful. I am beyond grateful and appreciate Maine Veterans In Need and everyone associated with these Awesome Veteran organizations who haven’t and don’t forget US. The American Veteran.

Timothy Majeroni, Army & Marine Corp. Veteran

Thank you for supporting Maine veterans.

Volunteering with Maine Veterans in Need (MVN) is truly rewarding.

Every hour you give has a direct impact on a struggling veteran and their family. Whether you have just a few hours here and there or can help more regularly, your time and talents will make a difference.

MVN offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities, so there’s always a place where your skills are needed. Once you reach out to Dave Patch, MVN President, he’ll provide a short overview of the organization, answer any questions, and discuss your interests and level of commitment.

New volunteers are invited to join our monthly meetings—either via Zoom or in person at our Brunswick office—to meet the team and get connected. You’ll quickly discover that MVN volunteers and partners are a dedicated, welcoming group united by a shared mission.

We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to the MVN team.
